There doesnt seem to be much opinion on whether TPL was any good?
I thought it was ok. better than most of the 3 series produced by Dave so far. The longer episode length gave more depth to the story for one.
We got alot more connection between characters as well, like Rimmers and Lister's moonlight speech, and cats emotional declaration that he was home. Diamond light Rimmer was fun, as was B&W mono Rimmer. The Cats were admittedly a bit crapper than hoped, and the 3 runaways not very essential or interesting. I didnt really like how they had turned from worshipping Cloister as a god, cant quite put my finger on it, but it just didnt work for me, and therefore it was a poor choice of plot.
Not a bad effort in my opinion, but i still long for a quality series rather than these specials

Well I didn’t enjoy it much at all. I quite liked the sun/moon stuff, but then I remembered that Lister is in fact a sleaze

Has he not got less sleazy as time has gone on though? I dont recall much sleazy stuff in recent series or TPL.

To be totally honest i did prefer the series10-11 over over the toooooooo long special. I would rather have 6 x 30 min episodes over a one off drawn out episode.
I think Doug had the sleazy writing and Rob sorta kept that in line, without Rob the cheezy sleezy is in there and I think both Doug and his son are both there with that.

quite surprised that several people have commented on Doug being quite sleazy. I suppose it never really crossed my mind, that his own character influences the show ( which of course it does), but perhaps naively i just thought Doug was less talented than Rob. He has the imagination, but it was Rob who had the real talent.

For some reason whatever they had together in the early days worked and created something to be eternally proud of. But like Symes and Patchy Capps’ haircuts, it’s gone a bit cringe now and like it’s trying desperately to cling to youth.

Thinking about it, comparing Doug's RD stuff with Rob's solo work as far as I'm aware of it, I'd say Doug is the more talented one, but I don't think it's possible to compare them this way. They just worked well enough together to edit the shitty bits and keep the good ones. The Promised Land was good in its drama parts for me, the comedy was mostly rubbish, apart from Holly, I enjoyed him. All the "haha, people behaving like cats" stuff was cirnge.

They could have portrayed the cats in a "Handmaids Tale" kind of way, like some crazed cult, worshipping Cloister. Some strange totalitarian society which they have to escape from. They left Red Dwarf because they believed the hats should be either red or green if I remember correctly, not because of a breakdown of their religion, so to find some bizarre sect of murderous religious zealots might have been better. Not some shite about a cowpat stone.

The bit with the floppy disk was funny and when they went to the TV shop and the navicomp said that guy had a small penis.

Did anyone laugh at the cats using a giant cat flap? I did to begin with, but then couldn't stop thinking how ridiculous it was. The cat species evolved on Red Dwarf, millions of years journey away from the nearest cat flap, and also it makes no logical sense for a humanoid species to be crawling through a giant cat flap.
Also, from memory the Anubis Stone was described as being named after a cat god. They could have used Bastet or Sekhmet, but instead went for Anubis, a canine headed deity.
These things bug my happiness because I'm a pedantic nerd.
Other than that, it was sporadically funny, which is all I hope for from Red Dwarf these days. I liked the story for the most part.

good call Paul Taylor. I struggled from the first minute when the ships formed a face of a cat in the opening sequence. As you say, the first cat flap was quite funny, less so as the show went on. I didn't unlike it, just disappointed with the cheap humour. Really seems to have lost its sharpness and intelligence

The cat flap, to be honest, was one of a few things about the cats that didn't make me cringe. Of course it was a cheap joke, but at least it wasn't connected with cheap acting. Maybe it has a hidden meaning as they have to crawl when they enter the kings room or so. I believe Richard Naylor explained there was a scene written, but never shoot explaining why the stone was called that.

Definately an improvement on "Timewave" in ever sense of the word. The production values were quite good though I thought. Quite hit n miss with some of the plot and jokes but where it added a bit of drama is where it worked well

I quite liked the visual gag with the ships formation being a cats face.
