After Series 6, Doug took on writing duties alone, and changed the tone of the show thereafter.
Do we agree with certain "bread line" type decisions?
For Instance, the loss of Rimmer, seemed ridiculous in my mind, and the whole Ace Rimmer thing nonsensical. He was a hologram, he could have had an emotional turning off / technical breakdown which would have really grabbed the viewer on a much more emotional level. They could have introduced another hologram, even the Konkanski hologram, as the new crew member, rather than the bullshit introduction they gave her
The chase for Red Dwarf was exciting. The nanobots story line of ressurecting Red Dwarf and the crew, leading into Series 8 was unnecessary convoluted Sci Fi crap. Giving us a horrible scenario, where Lister is no longer the last human alive, thereby taking away a fundemental element of why we love RD so much. The Pete the Dinosaur thing and the Cat dance was just childish writing...
Back to Earth and Corrie... no
The Dave series 10-12 sees a return to better structure for the show. It looks good, and the guys are in good form as you would expect from characters that have been together for nearly 30 years. Some plots however are very weak.. Timewave and (oh)Dear Dave.
Doug needs to hand the reins to new more dynamic writers, do we not agree?

Ellard would never suggest this, because first thing a new writer would do is sack him immediatelly for his rubbish script editing skills and an enormous consuption of spaghetti.

ANYWAY Doug can’t afford dynamic writers or any writers probably, since the move to Dave from BBC especially, so unless it was people trying to get started and honestly why take a risk with that rather than retire the show? Anyway I doubt Doug’s ego would allow it. I do think he should just end it though. It was of it’s time.

I do think it would be a shame if it did end. Its my go-to background noise, and I wouldn't be on here if I didnt have a love for the show. In one regard you have to respect Doug for his dedication, and he has given us many happy moments, but equally, one mans obsession to keep the show solely his, has stifled its potential and limited its scope to be truely a masterpiece, certainly from series 7 onwards. Personally i think if there had been a series antagonist(s), well rounded and with purpose, rather than a monster-of-the-week concept, then a red dwarf universe could have taken shape. I know they originally didn't want aliens to be part of it, but they went to enoromous lengths to find characters that could be explained as "non-aliens", namely GELFS, mad scientists, or Snacky the shite despensing robot - these ideas start to lose credibility and felt lazy and stagnant. The budget may be limited on Dave, but the concept hasn't moved forward enough to keep the viewer interested, which it why series 10-12 are ok, but are they really rememberable? Bearing in mind series 8 and BTE are remembered so controversially, only because of being so utter shite.

They still have the energy for some reason. For some reason, there's also an energy among fans (fewer and fewer of them with every series), who accept every shit Doug serves them. They don't want a proper sci-fi comedy show, they just want Red Dwarf to continue. And Doug dedicated his life to serve these fans, so he'll go and make more even with a loss of quality. Well, however, they're still suing each other, I suppose. So we won't maybe ever see more RD.

Yeah, I read abut the lawsuit, which is a really shame. Full credit to Doug, I'm still a fanboy and will always continue to watch if any more materialise. I can still be a keyboard critic however, and so wish that behind the scenes, Doug can see that "his baby" suffers because of his own stubbornness to take on new concepts. I would hate to see a change in cast, but the material simply has to be better, and for that I think Doug needs to bow out of writing duties

Remember when Doug spent weeks lurking around the book stall in south bank, til he found an RD book dumped there and then signed it and put it back...and posted about it on twitter like he just cured AIDS or made a sizeable donation to charity and all those weirdo fans acted like this made him a hero when tbh nobody really wants Doug’s signature outside of them. We can only hope that somebody else got in there first, before one of them was able to shift their weight out the door and waddle down there. Hopefully they also did something worth boasting about like making one of those fatties swap their virginity for it.

Yep. Would’ve had more respect for him if he signed someone else’s book tbh.

Don’t get me started. Do you know what was happening on that page? The dude narrating the story had a 12 year old stepdaughter who was laid across his lap eating an apple and he spaffed in his pants. Lister felt this was worth saving for fapping over. Lister is gross and a borderline nonce.

I imagine if it was some of the super fans, they would happily boast about it on Twitter. Although it's nice to imagine a tiny bookshop crammed with large people searching for one book, more probably no-one cared and it's still there. I also can't imagine why would anyone swap any book for virginity of these people.

Though it’s weird they chose THAT page number, implying they did indeed know what was happening in that scene, else it wouldn’t make sense to include it.

You make quite a valid point. Although my image of Lister as my anti hero is being tainted here, I think I might just to ignore the scene and live in ignorant bliss
